FREE COMMUNITY CHOIR TASTER SESSIONS FOR TEIGNBRIDGE RESIDENTS
When I was sneezed out of somebody’s nose
I was a bundle of proteins, not even living
Then you breathed me right into your body, let me into your cells
Now I’m alive!
Just one verse from the dozens of science-based songs in the repertoire of the South Devon Singers community choir. But they also sing non-sciency modern settings of poems by William Blake, Shakespeare, John Keats (including two of his very saucy ‘doggerel’ verses from his 3 months in Teignmouth), Charles Causley, and the much-loved Totnes poet Matt Harvey. In addition they have unique arrangements of classic hits such as Tiptoe Through the Tulips, What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted, Dancing in the Street, Blue Moon and the like. There’s also a smattering of 16th and 17th century songs in their portfolio. The only generalisation you can make about an SDS concert is that you’ll always be surprised.
With funding from Teignbridge District Council, South Devon Singers are offering free taster sessions on four Saturday afternoons in April and May, and will welcome anyone and everyone, of all ages, to come along and try out the experience of singing with others for an hour - followed by coffee, tea, home-made cakes and biscuits, and a chance to chat with choir members. Everything is free but donations will be welcome to help cover costs.
Musical Director David Haines says “we do things very differently from many choirs. There are no auditions, no insistence on memorising songs, no choreographed movement, and you don’t need any previous experience. Our songs are catchy, tuneful, mostly less than 30 years old, in every style you can imagine, and often on the most extraordinary subjects: from viruses to compost heaps, string theory to Tudor food, intelligent slime-mould to wild swimming. In the taster sessions, we’ll sample a selection of songs from silly to serious, simple to challenging. It’ll be fun, informal, and perhaps even a little enlightening.”
